What AI visibility measures
Whether AI answer engines can find, read and quote your pages — and what to do when they cannot.
Search rankings are no longer the only way people find a page. AI Visibility measures whether the engines that answer rather than list can use your content.
The three things it checks
Can they fetch it? Some AI crawlers are blocked by default by a robots.txt written years ago for search engines. The check reads yours and names each crawler it would refuse.
Can they read it? Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. A page whose content only exists after the browser executes a script is, to them, an empty page — regardless of how it looks to you.
Are they quoting it? We ask a set of questions your pages ought to answer and record whether your site is cited. That is the outcome measure, and it is the one that moves slowly.
What to do about a bad score
In this order, because it is the order of effort:
- Allow the AI crawlers in
robots.txt. One line each, and it is reversible. - Make sure the answer is in the served HTML, not assembled by a script.
- Write the page as an answer to a question somebody asks in their own words, with the
answer near the top.
Why the number moves slowly
Because it is measuring somebody else's index. A fix to robots.txt shows up in the fetch check immediately and in the citation check over weeks. Judge it on the trend, not on today's figure.
