There are around 2,500 accredited domain registrars. We work out which one holds your domain from the public register, so you never have to tell us — and we have step-by-step instructions for the ones people actually use, plus instructions that work anywhere else.

Why this is more useful than the instructions you will find elsewhere
- It tells you whether it actually worked. We read the live public DNS and the domain's registry record, so you get a real answer rather than being told to wait and hope.
- It knows the difference between not done and not yet. A change that is saved at your registrar but still spreading is a success, and we say so, instead of showing you a failure you cannot act on.
- It never guesses. If a lookup does not come back, we tell you we could not tell — we will not report your working domain as broken.
Common questions
How long does a nameserver change take?
Your registrar usually records it within a few minutes, and we can see that immediately on the public register. Spreading to every network on the internet normally takes anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. If this page says the change is spreading, it is already done at your end and you do not need to do anything more.
Why does it still say my domain points somewhere else?
Either the change has not been saved at your registrar yet, or it was saved somewhere other than the nameserver field — several registrars have a DNS records screen and a separate nameservers screen, and editing the records does nothing if the nameservers still point elsewhere. Check the steps for your registrar above, then press Check again.
Do I have to move my domain to you?
No. Changing nameservers leaves your domain registered exactly where it is, with the same registrar and the same renewal. You are only choosing who answers DNS questions about it. You can point it back at any time.
Can you just change it for me?
For some registrars, yes — if you give us a restricted API key, we can set the nameservers on your behalf and you never touch a control panel. Where we can do that, this page says so after you check your domain. For everyone else the steps above take about a minute.
