The vector index

The vector index is a searchable representation of your content's meaning rather than its words. It is what lets a search for "how do I get my money back" find a page titled "Refund policy".

What it powers

• Search on your own sites, where it finds pages that answer a question rather than pages

that repeat it.

• The assistant, when it answers questions about your content.
• Content suggestions — what you have already covered, and what you have not.
• Internal linking, by finding the pages a new post genuinely relates to.

What is in it

Published pages and posts from the sites you have enabled, plus any documents you upload to it. Drafts are not indexed. Nothing from other customers is ever in your index and nothing of yours is in theirs — the index is scoped to your organisation and enforced in the database, not by a filter somebody has to remember to add.

When to rebuild

Almost never: it updates as you publish. Rebuild when you have imported a lot of content at once outside the normal publish path — a migration, a bulk restore — because an import does not always announce itself.

Vector → Rebuild does it per site, in the background, and search keeps working on the old index until the new one is ready.

If a page is missing from it

Check it is published and not noindex, then look at the site's row for the last index time. A page that has been published for an hour and is not there is a bug worth a ticket, not something to fix by rebuilding.
