Selling email under your own brand

The four hostnames your clients' email uses, and why every one of them has to be yours.

Reselling → Your mail hostnames.

What this screen is for

Email is the one product where your brand is not decoration. Your client types a hostname into their mail app every time they set up a phone, and their browser shows one every time they read a message. If those names are not yours, your client learns who is really behind your service — on the surface they touch most often.

So hosted email becomes available to sell once you have given us your own hostnames, and not before. Until then the screen says so and the product is simply not offered on your plans.

What you need

Five names on a domain you own, and one SPF delegation:

Mail servers (MX) — two hostnames, mx1. and mx2. on your own domain. Create an A record for each, pointing at the addresses in your setup guide. ⛔ Not a CNAME: a CNAME leaves our hostname visible in any lookup your client runs, which is the whole thing this avoids.

SPF include — a hostname you control whose own SPF record includes our senders. Your clients' domains will include yours, so the chain reads as yours.

IMAP and SMTP — what your clients type into Outlook, Apple Mail or their phone.

Autodiscover — lets Outlook and Apple Mail set an account up on their own.

Webmail — where your clients' browsers go to read their mail. The name they will see most often, so it is worth choosing carefully.

Why it is all-or-nothing

The screen will save a partly-filled brand, but email stays unavailable until every field is set. A half-finished brand would publish your mail servers and then send your client somewhere else to read their mail — which is worse than not offering it at all, because it looks like it is working.

What your clients see

Your hostnames, everywhere. In their DNS, in their mail app, in their browser. They do not see our name, and they do not see the name of anyone we work with.

What you still control

Mailboxes, forwarding addresses and catch-alls for each client, priced by you on your own plans and billed through your own statements, exactly like hosting.
