These are three different settings for three different problems. Reach them from the site's security settings.

Countries

Either a block list (everyone may visit except these) or an allow list (nobody may visit except these). It is one switch, and it is worth reading twice before you save: an allow list containing one country takes your site off the internet for everybody else, which is occasionally exactly what you want and is otherwise a bad afternoon.

Clearing the list removes every country restriction; there is no separate "unblock everywhere" step.

⚠️ An allow list would take you out of Google, and this is the part people miss. Search engines crawl from their own addresses — Googlebot from the United States, wherever your visitors are — so an allow list that does not include those countries would block the crawler along with everybody else, and a site that cannot be crawled falls out of the index. It is not immediate and it is not obvious, which is what makes it expensive.

So we let verified search engines through by default. Leave that switch alone and Google and Bing keep reaching your site from wherever they crawl, even with an allow list naming one country. You can turn the exemption off if you genuinely want no exceptions — that puts the risk above back exactly as described, and the screen says so when you do.

⛔ The exemption needs a provider that can verify a crawler, and not all of them can. Verifying means checking that a visitor calling itself Googlebot really is Google, by its addresses — not taking its word for it, which anyone can copy. Our Cloudflare edge does this. Bunny, CDN77 and Gcore do not, so on those there is nothing safe to let through and we let nothing through. On a provider that cannot verify crawlers an allow list carries the full risk above — the site's country screen tells you which case you are in, and you should read it before relying on the exemption. Prefer a block list there.

Individual addresses

For a specific nuisance — one address hammering a form, one scraper. This is the right tool for a handful of addresses and the wrong one for an attack, which arrives from thousands and changes them faster than you can type. For that, the CDN's protection is what you want.

SEO crawlers

Third-party SEO crawlers — the ones that build backlink databases — can be blocked individually. People do this to keep their link profile from being catalogued by competitors.

You cannot de-index yourself here. Search engines are not in the list to choose from, by design: blocking Googlebot is a decision with consequences far beyond what this screen is for, so the screen will not do it. Your robots.txt is untouched by this setting and stays yours.

⚠️ That protection is specific to this control. The country rule above has a guardrail of its own, but a conditional one — it lets verified search engines through by default, and only where your provider can verify them. If you have used both, the country rule is still the one that can cost you your rankings, so check what its screen reports rather than assuming the exemption is in force.

What none of these are

None of them is a substitute for keeping software updated. Blocking a country stops that country's traffic; it does not fix the out-of-date plugin that the traffic was probing for.
