A group is a label on a set of sites. Once sites are grouped, anything that can act on one site can act on the group.

What groups are actually for

  • Bulk actions. Update WordPress across a group, change PHP version, clear caches, run a
  • malware scan — one action instead of forty.

  • Reporting. Uptime, speed and visibility figures roll up per group, so a client's sites
  • read as one number.

  • Access. A team member can be given a group rather than the whole account, which is how
  • you let a contractor work on one client's sites and nothing else.

  • Finding things. The sites list filters by group, which is the difference between a
  • usable list and a scroll.

Creating one

Sites → Groups → New group. Name it after the thing it means to you — a client, a language, a network, a stage of build. Then add sites from the group's own screen or from the sites list.

A site can be in more than one group

That is deliberate. A site can be Client A and WooCommerce and Needs PHP 8.4 at once, and each of those answers a different question on a different day.

Deleting a group does not delete its sites. It removes the label and nothing else.
